Telling Your Nigerian Family That You’re A Gender Studies Major

I’m a very proud feminist. I come from a line of strong feminists. My grandmother (a five foot, red-headed, Irish woman) is a total hippy, who was disowned by her family when she married my Nigerian grandfather years before Loving v. Virginia. In her free time, she hosts a very radical podcast and volunteers for the Washington Democratic party. My mom is a self proclaimed feminist who kept her maiden name and didn’t let me play with Barbies as a child. I grew up in a pretty egalitarian household as well, where my dad does all of the cooking and (don’t tell my mom) a lot of the cleaning. My parents never showed favoritism between my brother and I.
