Why did you choose Cornell?

I chose Cornell for a number of reasons. The first time I stepped foot on the campus, I knew that this was the place I wanted to be. Something just clicked for me---I didn't know that stories from other people about instantly knowing were true. I loved the location, the wide variety of classes, the quality of the academics, and the atmosphere. In addition, the Varsity gymnastics team was a perfect fit for me; the coaches and the girls were amazing on my official visit, and I knew I would be so happy and fulfilled completing my undergraduate degree here.

How did you decide to major/minor in FGSS?

Feminist and gender studies were fascinating to me. My intro FGSS class introduced me to reading theory and exploring various forms of oppression, and I instantly knew that I would enjoy taking other classes on the topics. In addition the major paired well with Government, which was what I initially intended to major in when I entered Cornell. I knew that I would be able to balance both because of my passion for both and the flexibility of the major and the wide variety of classes that I could take.

What are your career and/or educational goals for the future?

My ultimate goal is to become a lawyer within sports law. I have wanted to go to law school for as long as I can remember, but I only recently figured out that I wanted to focus on sports law. There is an incredible amount of gender discrimination and a large gender pay gap within athletics—two issues about which I am incredibly passionate. My current plan is to take a couple gap years after graduation to get a bit of experience in the workforce before applying to law school.

What has been your favorite FGSS class?

I think my favorite FGSS class that I have taken is FGSS 3000: Feminist Theory. I loved the various theory, history, and intersectional topics that we discussed in this class. In addition, the structure of the class allowed me to research and explore a modern topic that related to gender and feminist theory. I loved this research project so much that I almost pursued a thesis on the topic.

Favorite memory or experience at Cornell?

This is a hard question for me because I have made so many good memories here. It might sound silly, but I really treasure the small, fun memories with my friends--quick runs to Nasty's or Jason's for snacks during a study break in finals season, driving to Frosty Cow in Dryden for a sweet treat, and the countless hours on a bus with my teammates. Cornell has so much to offer, whether it be people, classes, or connections, and the memories that I have made here will last me a lifetime.

What student clubs or student organizations have you participated in?

I am a member of the Varsity Gymnastics team---one of the main reasons that I chose to attend Cornell was because of this incredible team and the opportunity to continue my sport at a D1 collegiate level. I am also on the E-board of Knit with Care, a student club for beginner and avid crocheters and knitters. Finally, I am also involved in Cornell Student-Athletes for Sustainability (CSAS), an organization that seeks to preserve the Earth and turn our athletic facilities into a more sustainable environment for all athletes.

What positive advice would you give to a new student?

Be yourself and don't be afraid to try something new! College is the place where you really discover who you are and what you are passionate about. It is okay to not have a plan or know what the future looks like. Be in the moment and enjoy the four years that you have here.
