Senior student spotlight: Kyra Streck '20

Name: Kyra Streck

Year: Senior

Major and minor: Fashion Design and Management major and LGBT Studies minor

Hometown: Deep River, CT

Fun fact about yourself: I'm really good at doing impressions of people I know.

1. How did you decide to minor in LGBT and how does it complement your field of study?

I decided to minor in LGBT Studies because I'm really interested in the multitude of ways queerness and fashion intersect. My areas of research include effects of chest binding, developing underwear specifically for the queer community, and the ways that queer people use DIY methods and body modifications to express their identity.

2. What has been your favorite LGBT class?

LGBT 2760: Desire

3. What are your future career and/or educational goals?

I don't totally know what I want to do, but I like working in the trans-inclusive clothing sector of the fashion industry, but I may decide to continue pursuing academia. I also may go to law school to study intellectual property and the ways that capitalism, authority, and queerness intersect.

4. What is the best decision you've made at Cornell?

The best decision I've made at Cornell was to become engaged in research. As a fashion design major, I was initially pretty hesitant because I was unsure if academia and design could mesh in a way that was interesting to me, but they totally did and opened up my curiosity so much. I now look at fashion analytically as well as aesthetically and am fascinated by how much queerness and fashion are interrelated.

5. As a senior, what is your most hilarious/embarrassing memory at Cornell?

That's a tough one, but I did see a monster truck driving down East Ave a couple days ago.
