Senior student spotlight: Katrina Howard '21

Name: Katrina Howard

Year: 2021

Major and minor(s): major: Engineering Physics, minor: FGSS

Hometown: Millington, NJ

1. Why did you choose Cornell?

(I don’t remember,, probably to fuel 18 year old me’s ego so we don’t need to talk about that)

2. How did you decide to minor in FGSS?

Going to a liberal arts school, I felt I piece of my education would be missing if I only spent time doing engineering/physics requirements. While physics involving learning about the world in terms of what my electrons are up to, studying FGSS involves learning about myself and the communities I’m a part of. I missed out on this learning before college, so I have been attempting to connect with it here.

3. How does FGSS compliment your major field of study?

It is so completely different, which is what I like about it. I hope to bring what I learned from the FGSS department to help make physics a more diverse and welcoming place of study.

4. What are your future career and/or educational goals?

I will be working on a PhD starting in the fall so I can train to become a particle accelerator physicist.

5. What has been your favorite FGSS class?

FGSS 3000 Feminist Theory! At first I was frustrated that the papers didn’t have prompts but grew to love the opportunity to be truly creative.

6. Favorite memory at Cornell?

Adding some artwork on campus that was not requested or endorsed. (take a peek around Clark Hall if you have the chance)

7. What positive advice would you give to a new student?

Please get enough sleep and treat yourself nicely. Having a body is annoying because it has Needs, but unfortunately your body is a vessel for your mind, so we are stuck like this.
