I Love My Perm… And Chimamanda Adichie’s “Americanah”

Creating the NigerianGrl blogs has been an amazing opportunity for me to read contemporary Nigerian literature. I have no excuse for not already reading Americanah. Chimamanda Adichie is one of my favorite authors and I am constantly trying to find literature that discusses Nigerian-American (or American-Nigerian) identity. Below are the top six things that I learned (or reaffirmed) while reading Adichie’s book.

  • Your boyfriend’s mother is not inherently evil. Mother-in-laws/ mother-in-law figures can (and should be) great support systems for both your relationship and your personal  development.

  • Your worth is not dependent on your accent; whether it’s American or Nigerian. Also stop calling Nigerian accents bush.

  • The love of your life and the right person to marry are not always the same thing.

  • Everyone can experience a mental health crisis; not only Americans (or Americanahs!).

  • Labeling Nigerians as the model minority (or “most educated immigrants”) discredits a lot of the hard work and struggle it takes to immigrate and assimilate to the United States.

  • It’s okay to love your relaxer.
