Creating the NigerianGrl blogs has been an amazing opportunity for me to read contemporary Nigerian literature. I have no excuse for not already reading Americanah. Chimamanda Adichie is one of my favorite authors and I am constantly trying to find literature that discusses Nigerian-American (or American-Nigerian) identity. Below are the top six things that I learned (or reaffirmed) while reading Adichie’s book.
Your boyfriend’s mother is not inherently evil. Mother-in-laws/ mother-in-law figures can (and should be) great support systems for both your relationship and your personal development.
Your worth is not dependent on your accent; whether it’s American or Nigerian. Also stop calling Nigerian accents bush.
The love of your life and the right person to marry are not always the same thing.
Everyone can experience a mental health crisis; not only Americans (or Americanahs!).
Labeling Nigerians as the model minority (or “most educated immigrants”) discredits a lot of the hard work and struggle it takes to immigrate and assimilate to the United States.
