FGSS Student Spotlight: Jasmine Shi '28

Name: Jasmine Shi

Year: Sophomore

Major/Minor: Double major in FGSS & Information Science

Hometown: Shanghai, China

Why did you choose Cornell?

I chose Cornell because of its incredible interdisciplinary opportunities and the balance between a vibrant academic environment and an active extracurricular community. During Admitted Students Day, I met current students in the FGSS program and even sat in on a graduate seminar—everyone was so welcoming and passionate that I immediately felt at home.

How did you decide to major/minor in FGSS?

I originally came in planning to double major in Anthropology and Economics, but I always knew I wanted to be part of FGSS. After taking three FGSS courses in my first semester, I realized that I wanted the FGSS curriculum (which is very flexible and I loved all my classes) for my undergraduate studies so I officially declared it as my major.
What are your career and/or educational goals for the future?: I plan to apply to graduate programs in Anthropology/Sociology/Asian Studies with a gender studies focus!
What has been your favorite FGSS class?: I loved Reproductive Justice (FGSS 3040) with Prof. Newman! Reproductive Justice has always been a topic I was interested in but didn’t know a lot about, and the class was a vibrant seminar where we covered a lot of books and literature.

Favorite memory or experience at Cornell?

Staying in Ithaca over the summer to do research! Highly recommend experiencing the Ithaca summer.

What student clubs or student organizations have you participated in?

I am in Social Business Consulting (where I got to work with the Trevor Project - super cool experience), Hack4Impact, the Chinese Students & Scholars Association, and also 2 dance clubs!

What positive advice would you give to a new student?

Cornell truly lives up to “any person, any study.” My advice is to try everything that interests you. Sign up for different experiences, meet people outside your comfort zone, and don’t be afraid to explore!
